Adapted from Epidemic of Indigestion in America by Dr. Morton Walker Do you want to avoid the loud burps and belches, soothe your sizzling heartburn, eliminate the bad odor of halitosis, halt repeated bouts of indigestion, end aching cramps in the abdomen, stop excessive quantities of escaping rectal gas, and generally feel more comfortable with the workings of your digestive system? A $250 Million plus campaign has been taking place each year for the past few years. The beneficiary of all this antacid advertising is supposed to be the medical consumer, but that's far from true. Even if only one of the promoted digestive aids (featured in these campaigns) finds a place in your home medicine cabinet, your body may be the worse for it. The new generic histamine-II (H2) blockers (in antacids) work by reducing the production of gastric acid- not just by neutralizing it. These compounds have been employed in prescription form for treating ulcers as well as heartburn. The new formulations use the same active ingredients as the prescription drugs, but in smaller doses. Unfortunately, the H2 blockers are significantly slower to take effect. And a major concern is that they can mask the symptoms of an active ulcer or cancer of the stomach or esophagus.2
Writing online, nutritional supplement expert, Earl Mindell, RPh, PhD, says: " Manufacturers won't admit it - but their antacids are often the cause of chronic stomach pain. Please don't take antacids for indigestion. They can create an antacid dependency. (They also can deplete your calcium… cause constipation…lead to kidney stones. and even impair kidney function.) Try Papaya instead. When you feel the need to relieve the discomfort of heartburn or a bellyache, eat a banana or chew a few papaya tablets. You can beat indigestion naturally." 1
The human stomach does its digestive work with the help of two items: physiologically created acid plus enzymes that are stronger than lemon juice or vinegar. Gastric liquid (hydrochloric acid (HCl), pepsin and other enzymes) is prevented from attacking the stomach itself by a jellylike layer of mucus called the mucosa that lines the stomach wall. The esophagus enjoys no such protection. If the stomach's contents back up into the esophagus, the result can be heartburn, sometimes accompanied by a bitter acid taste in the throat. There are far better, more natural ways to solve heartburn, sour stomach and other gastrointestinal troubles. Using probiotics preserves the body's ecology against "food" (that can incite heartburn). The gastrointestinal tract is like the Earth's atmosphere and deserves safeguarding against pollution.
Probiotics are concentrated whole foods derived from friendly gut bacteria that provide a restoration of complete nutrient complexes. These advantageous microorganisms make the digestive tract work more effectively so that heartburn may never affect you anymore. Realize that beneficial bacteria once had been ingested as part of food grown in rich, unpolluted soil, but for the last half-century our farming soil has been sterilized with pesticides and herbicides, killing those good bacteria. Heartburn strikes because such probiotics are absent in our highly processed foods, and they need to be returned to the gut. You can do this easily merely by making probiotics a part of your usual diet. Acquire them from any health foodstore. To learn which probiotic brands are best, ask the health food store proprietor to interpret the products' labels for you. Then enjoy beneficial gastrointestinal restoration and no more heartburn.
